Poor Seeing
Posted
Hi!

Just downloaded the trial version to find out if CCDAutoPilot is the thing for me. I'm using a Canon DSLR as my primary imager, and Maxim DL to control it. To my big surprise I discovered that the - apparently - only way to control the ISO level is through a filter setting: First filter ISO 100, next filter ISO 200 etc.

This works fine - I labelled the filters with the ISO value they represent. But what happens the day I actuallly buy a filter wheel? - let's say I want to be able to take som darks in my session.

But so far it works fine, except for the guiding. But I haven't loaded any platesolving software yet. If the weather holds I'll try Pinpoint to night.

Clear skies!

That is apparently a limitation/method of operation of Maxim. All CCDAP can do is get the filter name from Maxim. How those filter names are defined by Maxim is beyond CCDAP's scope.

Can't you set your camera's ISO setting on the camera itself? Then you could use a filter wheel load a light blocking filter for darks. However, you would of course need a very light tight filter wheel.

I can set the ISO setting, yes, but Maxim overwrites it :-/ By the way - it took a while to get the idea to "install" a filterwheel and try the effect. :-). Now that I know a solution, I found the answer at the Maxim DL group at Yahoo:
"MaxIm DL operates all cameras the same way, including DSRLs. I should mention that with DSLRs, we usually reserve the filter wheel selector for controlling the ISO speed of the camera."

So there it is: Deliberate action - not a bug :-). Does CCDsoft support a DSLR?

Thanks for the warning about the thin filter wheel. I am aware of the limited space, so when I installed my MoonLite focuser, I left an appropriate space for a filter wheel.
