Is there any other means of auto-focusing besides FocusMax? I have a Windows Vista laptop and FocusMax is NOT compatible. In fact, I'm not sure if a Windows Vista compliant version of FocusMax is even in the works. I have MaximDL v4.59. Can I use SharpStar as my autofocus program? I'll be using a FLI PDF.

Thank,

Wade

Hi Wade,

It is my understanding that some folks have been successful in getting FocusMax to run under Vista. Make sure you have UAC turned off as it interferes with certain functionality. Here is a post from Larry Weber that describes one thing you can try to see if that fixes the problem.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Steve Brady and I do not have Vista systems and so we can only be of limited
help in getting FocusMax up on Vista. However we have been given the
following advice by a programmer that has been successful at getting
FocusMax to run.

FocusMax is written in Visual Basic 6 and apparently Vista does not properly
register all of the needed files. This can easily be done by a simple batch
file. Take the following text and put it in a text file named FixVista.bat

Cd /d %systemroot%\system32
Regsvr32 /s /u sysinfo.ocx
Regsvr32 /s /u mscomct2.ocx
Regsvr32 /s /u msdatgrd.ocx
Regsvr32 /s /u comct332.ocx
Regsvr32 /s sysinfo.ocx
Regsvr32 /s mscomct2.ocx
Regsvr32 /s msdatgrd.ocx
Regsvr32 /s comct332.ocx

To run this batch file:

1. Place it anywhere on your hard drive or desktop.
2. You MUST have "run as administrator" privileges
3. Double click on the FixVista.bat icon to run the batch file.

This batch file simply un-registers 4 files needed by Visual Basic 6 and
then re-registers them properly. So it should be quite safe.

Please report back on how this works.

Larry

Good luck and HTH .......

Frank,

I'll turn UAC off to see if it helps. I've already attempted the batch file suggestion.

Thanks,

Wade

I turned off UAC to install FocusMax. I then turned UAC back on. I then attempted to run FocusMax, and it appears to be running properly; however, I am only running it in simulation mode. I'll be getting my FLI PDF tomorrow so I hope to test it with UAC on over the weekend. If all goes well, FocusMax will run properly. At the very least, I can turn UAC off while imaging and turn it back on when done.

Thanks for all your help,

Wade

Sorry for dragging up an old post, but trying to get FocusMax running has had me pulling my hair out under Vista. I've done all of the above with no effect. If I try to run FocusMax (latest version), it just sits there after I click on the icon. I've tried disabling UAC and running the batch file fix.

I'm using an FLI-PDF focuser and its software works fine under Vista.

I even tried buying the camera plug in for CCDSoft, but the Finger Lakes driver doesn't install properly under Vista and that doesn't work either.

Help! Frowner

Regards,

Nick
