Poor Seeing
Posted
Hi,

If the camera is precisely aligned with North=Up and West=Right (for a non-reversing optic), then I assume the Camera Roll Angle would be zero. Now if I grab the camera so aligned, and rotate it Counter-Clock-Wise by 1 degree, is the Image Roll Angle now 359, or is it 1?

Thanks,
WB

Hi Walter,

For the polar alignment wizard:

The range is +180 to -180, but values near +/-180 are converted to near 0 degrees. If a trail is vertical the angle is near 90 degrees. If the trail is horizontal the angle is near 0 degrees. The next step (Determine N/S/E/W) determines the compass directions. The angle is thus saved as a combination of trail angle and N/S/E/W positions.

For the calibration wizard:

The range is +90 to -90. The angle for horizontal trails is again near 0 degrees. Vertical trails are near +/-90 degrees. Rotaing 2 degrees from 89 may cause the angle to be -89 degrees. The last step of the calibration wizard ("L" pattern) determines the final orientation.

Thanks, but I'm asking a slightly different question. Let me try it another way:

If a Plate solve tells me my camera angle is 358 degrees, do I enter 358 (-2) or do I enter +2? I've seen different software report that angle using different conventions, and I don't know which convention you're using.

I think I understood your question ok. I was hoping you would see from my answer that you cannot just enter a camera angle. Smiler It's a two step process that is required to care of mirror reflections too. So, please just use the wizard(s).

Note that the camera angle/reflection parameters will be saved between sessions so if you don't rotate the camera then you can skip those steps in future sessions.
