just wondering if it is even worth trying to test collimation in below average seeing. weather has been horrendous here in the northeast us for months.

Hi Dave,

You can certainly try. Bad seeing will cause much more of a variation in reported collimation error. It is then much more important to either average a number of frames when the seeing is bad (Real Time->Images to Average menu).

Alternatively, you may want to pay attention to a few frames at a time to see whether the number and the direction of the reported collimation error is stable. If it is changing wildly from frame to frame, then you've reached the best accuracy you can under the given conditions.

So yes, you can do a reasonably good collimation with poor seeing, but the best collimation will be achieved on a good-seeing night.
