I am upgrading to a 64 bit machine to enable more subs during processing without running out of memory. I wish to turn off caching. Any issues with ” Vista® Home Premium 64-bit edition” to accomplish this? I have seen reference to XP64 and VISTA64 and CCDSTACK, but not the OS mentioned above.
Thanks,
Jim

I have the same machine since spring and have had no issues. I have caching deselected.

Thanks Larry. May I ask what the largest number and size (STL 11K, etc) of subs you have had opened?

best regards,

jim

I have opened 120 STL 6303 images with no problem, I think it was a nearly 4GB load. I have 6GB of memory

Dean's quantity and size are more than I have done but I think his answer says it all. I have only done about 40 ST-2000XM size images.

It's a bit complicated to figure out the "maximum" number of images beforehand. I put "maximum" is in quotes because there is essentially no absolute maximum for 64 bit OS but once the physical RAM is fully used then performance becomes very slow.

Monitor memory consumption by watching the VM that is displayed in parentheses on the bottom left border. More information can be seen via Windows “Task Manager” (right click the Windows task bar to choose Task Manager).

For 64 bit OS: when CCDStack consumption gets within 1GB of the total amount of physical RAM then it’s time to limit the stack size (e.g. if the computer has 4GB then avoid stacks that exceed 3GB). Alternately, you can engage the CCDStack cache (Edit; Settings) to extend beyond the physical RAM (the CCDStack cache is much more efficient than Windows paging).

For 32 bit OS: the VM limit is near 1GB, regardless of the physical RAM (this is due to the limited number of memory addresses for 32 bit). You should always use CCDStack cache for 32 bit OS (Edit; Settings).

Special note for Bayer (One Shot Color, DSLR): memory consumption can shoot thru the roof when you de-Bayer into full size color. If the de-Bayering exceeds your computer capacity then consider de-Bayering via “Extract” or de-Bayer and process one color at a time.

Thank you Dean, Larry and Stan. My need is more inline with Larry, so I will be quite happy if I can get 40 or 50. One last question, does CCDSTACK work with Windows 7 64 bit?

thanks to all,

jim

Hi Jim,

I just tested CCDStack 1.60.4 with Windows 7, 64-bit, Evaluation Build 7100. I processed a stack of 18 x 4k x 4k image files. All functions appeared to work correctly. Peak memory usage was 2.65 GB. The only issue I found, and the same issue exists with CCDAutoPilot, is that when "Check for Updates" is run and an update is available, W7's security system prevents it from downloading. I suspect this is due to the download target being in Program Files.

A workaround is to start CCDStack (or CCDAutoPilot) from the actual program in the Program Folder instead of the shortcut and then right click on the program, selecting Run As Administrator. With this method, updates proceed as normal and are installed successfully.

I concur with John's feedback regarding Windows 7 and my experiences are with psuedo-official RTM version running 64-bit. In fact, ALL CCDWare applications are performing perfectly for me in this environment.

It's been a while since I had a machine with only 4GB of RAM, but as I recall back then, I was able to easily load up 50, STL11000M images (about 21MB each) and not break a sweat.

I did load up over 300 of these images on an 8GB system (Vista-64) all work perfectly! CCDStack on a 64-bit OS is an AMAZING combination!
