Poor Seeing |
I have a series of sub that were captured with an SBIG ST-4000 XCM camera using MaximDL 5.06. There were saved in Maxim as FITS files. I can debayer them without problem in MaximDL, but when I open them in CCDStack, the "Convert Bayer" option in the "Color" menu is grayed out, and I cannot debayer these images. In fact, all the options in the "Color" menu are grayed out except "Create".
I much prefer the CCDStack for this operation and I have other subs also taken with MaximDL and the same camera that I can debayer in CCDStack, so I'm thinking there's something in the MaximDL settings that's changed and is preventing me from debayering this latest set of subs in CCDStack. Any ideas? Thanks, Bert |

Correction...
I seems I cannot debayer ANY images captured in MaximDL using CCDStack. I can, however, use the "Convert Bayer" option of the "Color" menu on images captured in CCCDSoft. -Bert |

Well Duu-uuuh!
Seems I neglected to check "One Shot Color" in the camera manager. Once I figured that out, all is well. It is odd, though, that even without the OSC setting set in the camera manager, images captured in CCDSoft could could be debayered while those captured with Maxim could not. (??) In any case, sorry for cluttering up the forum with things I should have figured out for myself. -Bert |

Even though they are marked as One Shot in Camera Manager? What does the Filter column in Image Manager say? (You can always force Bayer recognition by typing Bayer into that field). Stan |

Stan,
Sorry if I was unclear. I hadn't marked the SBIG ST-4K as One Shot Color in the camera manager, and that's why the "Convert Bayer" option was unavailable. As soon as I did click the OSC check box, the "Convert Bayer" option was usable and worked just fine. What still puzzles me is that when I loaded subs captured with CCDSoft, the "Convert Bayer" option was usable even without the OSC check box marked in the camera manager, but not with subs captured in MaximDL. Strange... I think maybe the CCDSoft subs had "Bayer" in the image manager by default for some reason, possibly something CCDSoft puts in the FITS header. In any case, I'm good to go now. Thanks, Bert |

Stan,
I can convert Bayer with my 11K from Maxim..no problem..but I am finding that though each image was 10 minutes and they are all normalized, there is great color on some in the stack and hardly any on others. Should I be converting color before using Sum to combine into one final image, or use Sum before converting the final summed image into Bayer? Gary Carlsen jawssdoc@aol.com |

Generally you should follow the work flow outlined in Help: Concepts; Color; One shot (Bayer). But an exception can be made for non-offset (non-dithered) frames using a well aligned mount. Such frames are already "registered", so if you omit the registration step then it is permissible to stack the Bayer frames as they are (including data rejection such as sigma or min/max, though you should probably avoid normalization if possible) then de-Bayer after creating a mean or sum. This would be advantageous for processing on a limited computer (i.e. 32 bit OS) because most of the processing is done in monochromatic mode. But non-offset image sets are inferior to offset stacks because the same pixels continue to image the same areas and thus there is little or no data rejection effect for “bad” pixels because they continue to overlay themselves with no correction from “good” pixels.
